Vanillekipferl-Vanilla Crescents

I used to love when my mom would buy me those big tins of danish butter cookies. I try each and every kind, and then pick out my favorite. Before I knew it, that kind would be gone. What can I say, I know what I want. They might’ve been overly commercialized, but they were damn tasty.

I wanted to try a new kind of cookie, and so began my search for some kind Danish butter cookie. There were many to chose from, but I found a great recipe filled with cute pictures over at Delicious Days.

These cookies are called Vanillekipferl and are a yummy treat from across the seas. Originally from Vienna, Austria, the crescent shape of the cookie is a tribute to the Austrian armies victory over the Turkish forces way back when. Good ole Wikipedia, you never know what you can find there. This cookie is also a staple in Germany, and is a typical desert during the Christmas season there.
They are more biscuit like to me, with soft centers that melt in your mouth. And talk about a sugar high, that coating will cause your blood sugar to seriously spike. I tried to perfect the crescent shape, but they didn’t turn out as perfect as I wanted them to, but whatever. I particularly enjoy the almonds in the cookie. I grounded them up in the food processor first so they’d blend perfectly in with the flour. Can you see the pretty little almond flecks? So cute.

Recipe is here from a great blog, Delicious Days. These cute German cookies is a great holiday treat to add to your collection.

Yes, in Austria the Vanillekipferl recipe is passed on from generation to generation. My grandmother made them and my mother made them. Now I make them. Have a look: Vanillekipferl.
Is there an easier way to find this recipe? I can’t find it on the blog link.
