First, let’s start with the bad news. I didn’t make the snickery squares chosen for this week’s Tuesday’s with Dorie. I know, I know. But in my defense, I have already made these bad boys before. Actually, I think they were the first things I made once I received my baking bible. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make them yourself! Check out the round-up of bloggers who participated in this week’s TWD and see their creations. Side note: I just noticed thatnext week, a Russian pie-cake is on the bill. Oh dear. What is a single and lonely girl supposed to do with that massive dessert? Feed the local bums?!
Now, the good news. Well, it’s not necessarily a good thing for you persay but it didn’t fall into the bad news category. First off, I finished Julie & Julia, a great read about a blogger’s adventure with famed Julia Child. If you haven’t read this book, check it out. It chronicles real life blogger Julie as she tries out Ms. Child’s Mastering the art of french cooking for a whole year.
It got me thinking: if I were to do a 365 experiement, who would I choose? Who is my Julia Child? Don’t get me wrong, I love Julia, but she isn’t necessarily my guru. At first I thought I’d go with Martha, mainly because I’ve had a weird fixation with this all American symbol since I was a wee little girl, but her recipes don’t get the best reputation. Same thing goes for Nigella Lawson. I love this lady, and I even have a teeny girl crush on her, but I don’t know about her recipes. What do you think?

noskos - I came looking for your squares and ended up choosing between Martha and Nigella :-)
Well Nigella ofcourse! But being a guy it could not all be about the way they cook :-)
Patricia Scarpin - As much as I love Nigella (I do!), I’d choose Martha over her – I’ve made only a few of her recipes, but they all worked out fine. And I love crafts, I intend to learn how to sew and knit, too.
Karina - Between the two of them, I think I would choose Nigella. They both make great sweets, but Nigella’s food is more my style.
Marie - Personally I would choose Martha. I think Nigella is highly over-rated, seriously and I’m British!!! Take the apple dessert in to the office. Your co-workers will love you for it! If I had to do a 365 day cooking recipe experiment I’d choose Delia Smith, but then, once again I live in England and she is like a food God over here. HER recipes always turn out and she doesn’t have to look ostentaciously sexy to sell them either.
Di - I’m already thinking that next week’s recipe could be cut in half and baked in an 8-inch square pan. Or maybe just make the apple turnover variation and freeze the extras before baking.
Michelle - I didn’t get to make the Snickery Squares this week either…
If I had to choose, I would pick Martha. I think a lot of her recipes are a little more “classic” and I’d think you’d learn about more techniques and tricks than Nigella.
Amanda - Martha is definitely the more classic choice but NIgella is more my style. But, I know that Nigella has some untrusty recipes too. I know the Martha Stewart Living Book is a big go-to cookbook for many, so I am wondering if anyone has that book. If you do, what are your thoughts?
CB - I’d probably go Martha over Nigella but its probably b/c I am not basing it only on food. I love her DIY and artsy stuff too.
smellslikehome - I’d go with Martha. I’ve made a few of her recipes and have always enjoyed them. Sorry we missed you on this week’s TWD – looking forward to seeing how your Russian cake turns out next week!
kate - i think i’d go with martha. even though she is full of imperfections and somehow can still seem to do no wrong!
