ode to hitchcock

April 2, 2008

Researching for my Photography class is immensely entertaining. Browsing through old photo files, analyzing set design, playing around with composition, these are all the things that I look at in order to start thinking about my own photos. Some of my favorite photos are ones that depict old Hollywood glamour with vintage cosmetic makeup and retro set designs. I stumbled upon this collection featured recently in Vanity Fair and adored all aspects of it.

My favorite picture is this one with Gwyneth Paltrow & Robert Downey Jr. The lighting and the actor’s body stances work well with the overall theme of the photo. You never see their faces clearly, but the light hits directly on the actor’s hands.

Here, in this photo with Keira Knightley & Jennifer Jason Leigh from the movie Rebecca, the photographer focuses on the contrast between white and black. The flowers, faces, and hands are white and practically glowing yet the background is black and dark. It matches the movie’s ghostly theme.

Don’t you love the actor’s expressions in this photo imiatiting Strangers on a Train? I adore McAvoy’s chesire like grin and Emile’s hesitant glance.

from Hitchcock’s most notable films Rear Window. For the most part, I like Scarlett’s outfit with her glossy hair and the images in the background. The casting for this photo was unique as I wouldn’t normally put Scarlett & Javier in Grace Kelly and James Stewart’s shoes but it works in the photo.

I like the idea of recreating Alfred Hitchcock’s famous movies by using new movie stars. Some of my favorite movies are Vertigo and Rear Window but many people may not have seen some of Hitchcock’s great movies. Check out these pictures on Vanity Fair’s main website to see the entire collection.
