Ever since I moved to New York in 2012, I dreamed about a weekend spent on the beach. Not just any beach, but the Hamptons. With its aura of luxe (and a hint of snobbery to be frank) it is the ultimate weekend getaway. Last year, I didn’t get the chance to experience the greatness that is the Hamptons but this summer, I made it my goal.
Hamptons, or bust.
And you can cue the golf claps because I finally made it.
Thanks to my super sweet roommate (and her gracious boyfriend) I was able to relax and unwind for two days in Westhampton, which is only an hour and a half away but in my mind, it felt like I had been transported 1000 miles away. There really is nothing quite like blue skies, green grass, winding roads and open beaches. Seriously. I was such a happy girl, it’s not even funny. I was so happy that I even swam in the ocean, which is pretty unbelievable since I harbor a crazy Jaws fear that renders me useless in the ocean. Also, I managed to spend an entire afternoon on a boat, which isn’t easy for me since I tend to get a little motion sick on boats. But look ma, no puking! Woohoo.
I happily tagged along to check out the tiny town that is Westhampton, admired its overall quaintness, felt a little stab of longing for a more quiet life (damn you, small-town girl roots) and definitely indulged in a lethal dose of mexican food and cocktails. Overall, I had an amazing time. Any New Yorker out there knows how I feel- it’s practically required that you leave the city as much as possible, for your own sanity and the sanity of others. You start to become this awful, bitter, needy person when confined to city’s concrete skies. Think Cruella de Ville meets Bella Swan (Twilight reference folks) meets Joey Potter (worst TV character ever). But the minute you are safely out of the city’s boroughs (Queens or Brooklyn), you feel better. lighter. Relived. It’s like freaking magic.
Looking forward to my next trip in July. Big thanks to my roommate, her boyfriend and the entire Westhampton gang for taking me under your wings and showing this Hamptons’ virgin a good time.
