Weekend Hit List: City Bakery, La Esquina and a Karen Walker Dress

Hold up. Before we dig our heels into this week, can we just give this weekend a round of applause for being exactly what we all needed? After a week that left me reaching for the vodka (no joke), I filled my weekend days with friends, a little shopping and all my favorite guilty pleasures. Like champagne. And spring dresses. And grapefruit margaritas. And chocolate. And coffee. And City Bakery’s Chocolate Chip Cookies. Here’s a running list of this weekend’s hit list and what you should check out online and in the city, if you happen to be in my neck of woods.

1. Long Sunday walks that leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the week. I honestly spent the better half of Sunday walking through Chelsea, the West Village than through the East Village where I met up with close friends who perked me up with champagne and a marathon viewing session of Girls. Clear skies, Lord Huron blaring on my playlist made for the best of companions on Sunday. Well, besides the booze and my friends.

2. With wedding season upon us, I began my search for bridesmaids dresses and sweet party dresses appropriate for rehearsal dinners and bridal showers. I fell in love with this retro Karen Walker frock from Anthropolgie. Great print and color plus a super feminine cut.

3. I mean, what does a girl turn to when she is feeling a little down? Endless cups of coffee and a fatty fresh Chocolate cookie from City Bakery. In all honesty, I do believe City Bakery delivers the best cookie in all New York. You can quote me on that.

4. When it’s cold and flurring outside, the smart New Yorkers make their way to the museum. With Hitha and Usha as my museum partners, I saw the new Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity exhibit at the MET which looked at the way fashion influenced Impressionists. Very cool and you get to see all the fancy dresses in person! Woot!

4. And lastly, as if you didn’t realize, this weekend was all about savoring the now and not dwelling too much on the past. For this, I required only the best of cuisine and margaritas. Which is why I headed down to La Esquina. Despite the somewhat hectic crowd, I managed to gulp down two margaritas and a pile of tacos, which made for the best Saturday night I’ve had in weeks. Mainly because the gang of gals I had with me had me dying from laughter.

Well, it’s Monday. Don’t you just wish we could rewind back and it magically be Saturday? I mean, I’m sure you’d all be down with that. Did you do anything crazy/fun/interesting? Do share, I’m living in the weekend.

Weekend Playlist: “Don’t Save Me” by HAIM

This weekend, in between a few brunches and cocktails, I fully plan on doing some major spring cleaning. After a few hectic weeks where I spent little time at home, I will be able to lounge in the comfort of my yoga pants and lovely roommates. While I’m sorting out old clothes, doing laundry, taking down old pictures, putting up new ones, I’ll be listening to Haim’s “Don’t Save Me.”

You guys, I’m pretty addicted.

I can’t stop listening to it. It’s like when M83′s “Midnight City” came out and I listened to that for at least 4 weeks straight. To say my roommates hated me after a while would be an understatement.

Anyways, give this tune a listen and make it your mission to tackle those projects you’ve been putting off. I think with spring coming, it’s best to live in the “Out With the Old, In With the New” perspective. In both matters of the heart and your life.

On Good Friends and Peanut Butter & Nutella Cookies

I’ve written this post about 100 times, trying to figure out how to say what I wanted to say. Not because the words weren’t coming to me – haha no, it was actually the opposite. If there was ever a time for word diarrhea, it would be now, that’s for sure. The thing is, instead of talking about MY issues, I wanna talk about how amazing us ladies are.

That’s right, can we give ourselves a round of applause. I’ve spent the last six days with the finest friends a girl could ask for and wow. Moms-to-be, my fellow single gals, soon-to-be-married friends… We’ve all got stories to tell, heartbreaks to share, memories to reminisce over and in these past 6 days, I’ve done just that. With ample amounts of booze (not with the mom-to-be though, obviously.)

The thing is: we are never static; we’re fluid, complicated creatures. (Wait, is that a good thing?) When life gets a little rough, how you react is a true reflection of who you are and your character. Crap hits the fan, stress runs you down? Well, join the club. It happens to the best of us and it’s all about what you do in the midst of all the chaos. Are  you gonna step up or run? That’s the bottom line.

For me, I have figured out a pretty workable formula here for dealing with stress, or any of life’s curveballs. Throw on a heavy dose of red lipstick, give your hair a good toss, grab closest friends and get out. Which is exactly what I did this past week and, let me tell you, it works.

It was right around 4am on Sunday when I knew everything was going to be fine. I was in a dark, small dance club with two of my favorite people, getting down to the dj’s best hits, a cute guy acting as my dance partner, and it hit me. This, right here? The music, the friendly smile in front of me, the hand on my hip and the flowing cocktails? It was all good.

One of my favorite bloggers, Jess from the LoveList, basically wrapped up my entire thought-process so beautifully on her blog.

We always manage to find it within ourselves to try again though, don’t we? We all want to believe in love. We want to believe that person is out there. I still do, and I’m still going to try, despite the fact that tonight, all I want to do is crawl under the covers and give up.
To each and every other single girl out there: the fact that you dust yourself off, do your hair and go headfirst back out into the warzone makes you downright heroic – I dare any man to try that in heels. To that end, you are all my heroines, and as the Saturday nights come and go, I’m right there in the trenches with you.

And with that, I give you these cookies. Peanut Butter and Nutella Chocolate Chip, to be exact. They are pretty effing amazing, and I may have eaten a couple for breakfast (blame the hangover). They are slightly crumbly, extremely rich and deep with peanut buttery and nutella goodness. There’s something about nutella that just soothes the soul, don’t you think?

Consider it a must-bake item, especially if you get giddy at the prospect of nutella and peanut butter coming together in a truly romantical way. I’m going to be real honest here, I could definitely live off these. And actually have had them consistently for breakfast this week. Oops.

Peanut Butter and Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup nutella
  • 2 sticks softened butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chunks
  • 1 cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat liner.
  2. Place peanut butter into the freezer until firm, about 30 minutes.
  3. In a stand or electric mixer, beat butter and sugars until well combined. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until well combined. Mix in the nutella, beating in until only just combined.
  4. Place flour, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl. Add to wet ingredients along with cocoa powder, and chocolate chips, slowly mixing until just combined. Drop dollops of frozen peanut butter into dough and turn mixer on for just a few turns of the mixer to get swirls of peanut butter through the dough.
  5. With a medium cookie scoop, scoop dough onto prepared baking sheet, about 1 inch apart from each other. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, until cooked through. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. Serve with milk.
